Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Beamlock system made of ?

Beamlock structures are made from Glulam timber.

This is strips of timber which have been Laminated together at high pressure, which with its mechanical fixings, provides incredible strength.

The structures strength has been tested to prove that it is stronger than an oak equivalent structure. Glulam timbers are sometimes used instead of steal in construction.

Do you install Beamlock Structures ?

Yes we do. The Beamlock Building Company can install your Beamlcok Structure throughout the mainland UK.

How easy is Beamlock to put together ?

The Beamlock kit is a modular system suitable for self-build. Anyone with some DIY knowledge should be able to put the kit together.

We recommend you have at least 3 people to do the project, and allow approximately 7 days for a 2 bay structure.

Take a look in our Beamlock Technical Information section for a building Guide!. If you do decide that building it yourself is not for you, then talk to your Beamlock advisor about getting our professional team to build it for you

What is included with kit prices ?

The standard kits provide all of the Beamlock Components needed for the structure.

We offer cedar shingles and erection service as standard and are also able to provide joists, hangers, and floor deck etc for models with a room in the roof.

However, you will need a bespoke quotation for this. To get your Price please call us now!

What type of foundations are required for Beamlock Structures ?

The beamlock system works with most foundation types.

The foundation type you require will depend largely on your site and should be discussed with your ground worker. For more information please refer to our Beamlock Foundation page.

Do I need planning permission ?

This will depend vastly on which structure you choose.

If your overall ridge height is below 4m, then you may not require planning permission in your area, however we recommend that everyone check with their local planning authority as rules differ from region to region and area to area.

If you require help with gaining planning we can supply you with full-scale drawings for submission or we can carry out the whole planning application for you.

Can the standard designs be modified. e.g Can I increase or decrease the sizes ?

The standard kits can be easily widened by adding extra bays. The System is modular and is designed to be flexible providing you stay within the parameters of the system itself. (IE bay widths & lengths.)

It is possible to create bespoke designs using the system, however please bear in mind that deviation from the standard sizes can incur large costs. Extending post and beam lengths for example could mean re-engineering the structure to suit and could well mean you will need to add steels to support the structure.

Therefore, for minor deviations from the standard kits try and to stick to the standard dimensions to keep your costs down.

What type of roof covering can I use ?

The Beamlock system is designed to take most roofing tiles including slate and clay, as many people would like their garage roof to match their existing property (This may also be a planning requirement). As standard we can supply cedar shingles.

Please check with Beamlock if you intend to use a particularly heavy type of roof covering.

What type of cladding options is there ?

All our Beamlock garages are available with featheredge protective cladding.

However, the Beamlock system has been designed to accept many different types of cladding, as we understand that each site is different and many people wish to match their garage finish with their existing property.

If this is the case then we can simply supply a wall kit, which will allow you to fix your desired cladding choice.

Are Beamlock structures suitable for a room in the roof ?

Yes. Structures that have a 45 degree pitch roof have been designed to take first floor loadings but in order to do this you will need additional support posts. These are available to add as an option to the standard kits.

In order to complete your room in the roof build however you will need various other components. Whilst Beamlock Building can supply these components it will require a bespoke quotation.

Do I require a brick plinth ?

No you don’t require a brick plinth, this is purely optional however, many of our customers choose this option to keep the cladding better protected from puddles. (Brick Plynths need to be put in by your builder before the structure is clad).

Do the Garage Kits come with doors ?. If not do you supply them ?

Unfortunately doors are not included in the standard kit designs.

The Beamlock structure is able to take most standard outwardly opening hinged doors and sizes. (the designs, as are, cannot accomodate up & over doors. If you wish to use up and over doors you will need to consult the door manufacturer)

We suggest that you have your door manufacturer measure up after the structure is erected to avoid disappointment.

Do you deliver to the whole of the UK ?

The Beamlock Building Company offers free delivery on all kits to mainland England, Wales and Scottish lowlands..

For delivery to the Scottish Highlands, please call for a quotation

Do you deliver outside the UK ?

Unfortunately No. We are able, however, to deliver to a UK british port of your choice for you to then arrange collection and onward forwarding to your destination

Please note however, that The Beamlock Building Company cannot accept responsibility for the product after it has been sucessfully delivered to the port

Do I have to pay for Delivery ?

Delivery is FREE to UK mainland and Scottish lowlands on Beamlock Kits.

There may however be a delivery charge for specific component orders.

Can you supply just the components (Posts, Beams and Foot Plates> ?

Yes we can - Please contact us with a list of components you require along with the delivery postcode for a quotation.

Because the components are not being supplied as part of a kit or custom designed structure you will also require a Templating Kit and Router Bit Set.

Also, please note that we are not able to alter lengths of the standard posts and beams. You would need to do this yourself if required.
